Alayta is a shield volcano found at the western edge of the Danakil depression. The area has fresh lava flows, but no recent activity has been reported.
Pagli et al. (2014), for the purposes of investigating regional velocity fields, have looked at Envisat InSAR data covering this volcano. They report no deformation.
